Since friedel craft catalyst is a Lewis acid (electron deficient) the catalyst (anhydrous A l C l X 3 ) reacts with electron rich COOH group of benzoic acid and gets bonded. I think FriedelCraft reaction with Benzoic acid fails because the Benzene ring isdeactivated.

Hey..!!!
_________
_________
Friedal craft reaction involves the attack by an electrophile to the substituted benzene ring.
Benzoic acid does not undergo Friedel Crafts reaction because the carboxyl group is strongly deactivating and the catalyst anhydrous aluminium chloride used in the reaction acts as Lewis acid and gets bonded to carboxyl group.
