Explanation:

To convert benzyl alcohol to 2-phenyl ethanoic acid,

Benzyl alcohol is treated with KI to get benzyl iodide.

PhCH2OH+KI→PhCH2I+KOH

2. Benzyl iodide is heated with KCN.

PhCH2I+KCN→PhCH2CN+KI

3. Benzyl cyanide is reduced with LiAlH4 to get 2-phenylethylamine.

PhCH2CN+2H2→PhCH2CH2NH2

4. The product is treated with HNO2 and hydrolysed.

PhCH2CH2NH2+HNO2→PhCH2CH2OH+N2+HCl

5. The resulting product is now oxidised with K2Cr2O7/H+ to get the corresponding carboxylic acid PhCH2COOH.
