During British rule, the tribals of the Chota Nagpur plateau had lost the traditional rights they had over the land and forests in the region. Many tribals had been converted into bonded labourers and workers in plantations. The tribal way of life was under serious threat. Birsa Munda wanted to reverse this trend and wanted to revive the tribal society. This was because he firmly believed in the rights of tribal people to lead their lives in the traditional tribal manner. He resented the fact that an external power like the British had come in and deprived the tribal people of their rights and freedom.
