Answer:

Actual time 5:24 PM

Step-by-step explanation:

For every 12 mins, hour hand moves one small division in the clock.

and for every one minute, minute hand moves one small division in the clock.

As the mistake is of 57 minutes, there must be 60-57 = 3 division distance between hour hand and minute hand, so that when they interchange the places, it will give 57 minutes difference.

∴ between 5PM and 6 PM, the time when there is exact 3 division distance between hour hand and minute hand is 5:24

Minute hand is on 24th minute.. i.e. 1 division before 5

Hour hand is 2 division after 5 (12 min = 1 division, 24 min = 2 division)

∴ Actual time = 5:24 PM

Answer:

5:24pm

Step-by-step explanation:

Since the time read by the lady was 57 minutes earlier than the correct time, so the minute hand is (60 - 57) = 3 minutes spaces behind the hour hand.

Now, at 5 o'clock, the minute hand is 25 minutes spaces behind the hour hand.

To be 3 minutes spaces behind, it must gain (25 - 3) = 22 minutes spaces.

55 minutes spaces are gained in 60 minutes.

22 minutes spaces are gained in (60/55×22)

= 24 minutes

Hence, the correct time was 24 minutes past 5.
