Carbohydrates:
Carbohydrates are compounds of carbon, hyrdogen and oxygen. They're the main energy source for humans. From a nutritional point of view, they can be classified into sugars, starch, glycogen and cellulose. Sugars are small compounds, the most important of them being glucose. Starch, glycogen and cellulose are macromolecules, ie they are long chains of glucose used for storing energy. Humans cannot digest cellulose, but some herbivores can.
Carbohydrates are macronutrients, which means they are required in large quantities in the daily diet.
Proteins:
Proteins are macromolecules made up of long chains of amino acids. Amino acids are simple organic compounds which have carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and also nitrogen. There are 21 amino acids required for protein formation among which 12 can be synthesised in the body and 9 are "essential" ie they cannot be produced in the body and must be obtained from the diet. These acids combine in different ways to form millions of different types of proteins.
Proteins are major structural components of cells and they also regulate body processed and can also be used as a source of energy.
