NH3 diffuses faster than O2

less molecular weight always diffuses faster than compared to more molecular weight gases

for NH3 it is about 17 and O2 it'll be 32.

hence NH3 diffuses faster..

Answer : The NH_3 will diffuse faster because of the lower molar mass.

Explanation :

According to the graham's law of diffusion, the rate is inversely proportional to the square root of the mass.

Or, we can say that the lower the molar mass of gas higher will be the rate of diffusion of gas that means the gas will diffuse faster.

The formula of the rate of diffusion of two gas will become,

\frac{R_{O_2}}{R_{NH_3}}=\sqrt{\frac{M_{NH_3}}{M_{O_2}}}

where,

R_{O_2} = rate of diffusion of oxygen gas

R_{NH_3} = rate of diffusion of NH_3 gas

M_{O_2} = molar mass of oxygen gas = 32 g/mole

M_{NH_3}  = molar mass of NH_3 gas = 17 g/mole

Now put all the given values in this formula, we get

\frac{R_{O_2}}{R_{NH_3}}=\sqrt{\frac{17}{32}}=0.728

From this we conclude that the rate of diffusion of NH_3 is greater than the O_2.

Hence, the NH_3 will diffuse faster because of the lower molar mass.
