Displacement is always less than or equal to the distance traveled, so it cannot be greater than the distance. ... If a particle is moving in a straight line in one direction then the magnitude of displacement vector will be equal to the scalar distance.

It is because if motion is along a fixed direction, the magnitude displacement is equal to that of distance but if motion is along a curve the magnitude is always less than that distance.
