In BF3, B is sp2 hybridized with one empty pzorbital. The empty pz orbital on BF3 can be filled by lone pair f molecules such as NH3, (CH3)3N, etc .When this occurs, a tetrahedral molecule or ion is form which is sp3hybridized. We can represent the BF3 and NH3complex as H3N→BF3.Since boron halides readily accepts electron pairs, they act as strong Lewis acids.
