religion originated as a reaction against caste division and ritualism in india. The vaishnava and saiva saints of the south started the bhakti movement. In the 11th and 12th centuries the tamil vaishnava saints known as alvars and saivite saints known as nayanars both preached personal devotion to god as a means to reach god. Besides the oneness to god , bhakti saints also preached complete surrender to self to god and equality of all human beings without distinction of caste colour creed and religion.
