Historians classified bhakti traditions into two broad categories i.e. Nirguna (without attributes) and Saguna (with attributes). In the sixth century, Bhakti movements were led by Alvars (devotees of Vishnu) and Nayanars (devotees of Shiva). They travelled place to place singing Tamil devotional society.
