Rajendra Prasad, the first President of independent India, was born on December3, 1884, in a religious joint family of Zeradei, a small village in Bihar.A brilliant Scholar, an eminent lawyer, a freedom fighter, and an active journalist, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, was all this and much more.Rajendra Prasad was a serious and attentive student and showed brilliant results both at school and in college. He stood first in the entrance examination of the University of Calcutta and won a scholarship of Rs. 30/- a month.The Hindus and Muslims lived in harmony and all festivals, both Hindu and Muslim, were celebrated with great alacrity.Rajenbabu’s mother often told him stories from the ‘Ramayana’ the great Hindu epic, and sang bhajans(hymns).As was the custom in those days, Rajenbabu was married at the age of 12 to Rajbansi Devi. Rajbansi Devi lived within the traditional purdah of those days and Rajendra Prasad could hardly see her or talk to her.Rajendra Prasad was a brilliant student throughout his academic career. He also participated in debates and essay competitions.After completing his Master of Law examination with honour and winning a gold medal, he went on to complete his Doctorate in Law and became Dr. Rajendra Prasad.He started his practice in the Calcutta High Court and then moved on to the Patna High Court. He argued his cases so well that sometimes other lawyers attended court only to hear him talk.Around this time, the idea of nationalism was slowly taking root in his mind and he became a member of the All India Congress Committee.In response to Gandhiji’s call of non-co-operation, Rajendra Prasad gave up his successful practice as a lawyer and started a National College near Patna in 1921.For his participation in the Salt Satyagraha, Rajendra Prasad was imprisoned for six months for the first time. After that he went to prison several times.He also participated in the civil disobedience movement in 1932. In 1934, Rajendra Prasad did intense relief work, collecting food, clothing and medicines for the earthquake victims of Bihar.Rajendra Prasad was elected President of the Indian National Congress more than once. He presided over the Bombay session of the Indian National Congress in October 1934. Between 1939 and 1947, India moved steadily towards its goal of complete freedom.In 1946 an interim Government was formed under Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, with twelve Ministers. Rajendra Prasad joined the Government as Minister for Food and Agriculture.From 1946 to 1949, he presided over the Indian Constituent Assembly and helped to shape the Constitution of India. India became a Republic on 26th January 1950 and Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the first President of independent India.
