Bhartendu Harishchandra may be attributed to the pioneering effort in Hindi literature (also known as father of modern Hindi Literature). Then it was Chhayawadi pillars like Mahadevi Verma, Sumitranandan Pant, Jaishankar Prasad & Suryakant Tripathi Nirala who took it to the next level. There is the whole chronology of stalwarts with individual contribution to the language, but mine is just a brief answer.
