The very fact that the government has had to come up with initiatives to save the girl child proves that children of the two genders are not treated equally. This is particularly true in rural areas where there is a lack of education. The uneducated parents have a different mindset for boys and girls. To them, it is important for boys to study in order to earn a livelihood later in life. However, they feel that educating the girls is useless since girls are supposed to stay home and take care of the family. The concept of girls being financially independent is completely missing. Therefore, girls are raised to believe that they are inferior to boys and that they have to get married and take a lot of dowry along, to somehow make up for the supposed inferiority. The main aim of parents is to get the girls married, which is what happened in Bholi’s case.
This mindset has caused a lot of problems. It has created inequality between the two genders and encouraged the dowry system. This in turn has increased female foeticide wherein baby girls are killed at birth or even before that. Further, the unequal treatment has forced girls to remain financially dependent on their families (first on the father and then on the husband). They lose their individuality altogether, while the nation struggles with skewed gender ratio.
In states like Haryana, there is a dearth of brides. If this continues for long, India’s young population will decline, which will reduce the manforce available, in turn affecting the nation’s economy. Thus a household issue has become a serious national concern.
The government has introduced many schemes to encourage parents to educate the girl child. The schemes focus on financial help at crucial times like the birth of a girl child (in Bihar, a girl child is entitled to a cash amount), scholarships that ensure undisrupted education and fixed deposits of nominal amounts and high interest rates that can be withdrawn only when the child becomes an adult (to be used at the time of her wedding).
With changing times and government initiatives, we can only hope for things to improve. However, it takes a long time to change a backward mindset.
