It is the main antigravity muscle which helps in walking up stairs. Gluteal muscle group contains three muscles gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus, also called as glutes. These glutes are located in the backside of each hip in the body and compose major portion of the buttocks. Gluteus maximus is located superficially in the body.

Gluteus maximus and other muscles help to maintain the upright body posture and regulate the hip and thigh movements. These muscles play very important role in various body movement functions such as walking, running and climbing.
