On the molecular level, cardiac muscle contraction is a proces in which the proteins Myosin and Actin bind together. When zooming into the heart, its muscle tissue consists of many muscle fibers, each consisting of individual muscle cells. Running through these cells are myofibrils, which connect the cells together. If we zoom in even further, we see that the myofibrils are clusters of filaments. Figure 1 below shows this nicely.
