Appropriate Question:-

Vinod sold a watch to Arun at a gain of 12% and Arun had to sell it to Manoj at a loss of 5% if Manoj paid Rs3990 for it, how much did Vinod pay for the watch?

Required Answer:-

Given:-

  • Vinod sold a watch to Arun at a gain of 12%
  • Arun had to sell it to Manoj at a loss of 5%
  • Manoj paid Rs.3990 for the watch.

To find:-

  • Vinod's cost price of the watch.

Solution:-

According to the question:-

  • CP of watch by Manoj = SP of watch by Arun= Rs.3990

Calculating Arun's CP :-

We know that:-

  • CP(loss) = {100/(100 – Loss%)} x SP

Here, we have:-

  • Loss = 5%
  • SP = Rs.3990

Substituting the values:-

CP(Arun) = {100/(100 – 5)} x 3990

=> CP = Rs.{(100/95) x 3990}

=> CP = Rs.4200

  • Hence, cost price of the watch by Arun was Rs.4200

Again,

Calculating Vinod's CP :-

  • CP of watch by Arun = SP of watch by Vinod

∴ SP of the watch by Vinod = Rs.4200

We know that:-

  • CP(gain) = {100/(100 + Profit%)} x SP

Here, we have:-

  • Gain = 12%
  • SP = Rs.4200

Substituting the values:-

CP(Vinod) = {100/(100 + 12)} x 4200

=> CP = Rs.{(100/112) x 4200}

=> CP = Rs.3750

  • Therefore, cost price of the watch by Vinod was Rs.3750

Vinod paid Rs.3750 for the watch.
