(a- We use Potassium Hydroxide solution in X and Y test tubes because KOH is a good absorber of CO2. So it absorbs the CO2 released by Germinating Seeds and create a partial vaccum.

(b- The Boiled pea seeds soaked in a disinfectant are used as a control group. In Biology every experiment is a controlled experiment. It has 2 groups:

  1. Experimental group (Germinating peas)
  2. Control group (Boiled peas)

Both the groups are treated exactly alike except for one variable being tested i-e CO2.

(c- We know that the Germinating pea seeds do cellular Respiration and release CO2 while Boiled pea seeds cannot respire and can't release CO2. The CO2 released by Germinating peas in test tube X is absorbed by Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) and it create a Partial Vaccum in the test tube X and then in Tubing 1. Due to which coloured water rise in Tubing 1 only in order to maintain pressure.

(d- The name of this experiment is Seed Germination Experiment. The biological process which causes above rise of coloured water is the Cellular Respiraton in which O2 is used to break Carbohydrates and release CO2 gas.

I hope this may help you
