Gopal Krishna Gokhale born on May 9, 1866 was one of the most distinguished leaders in Indian National Congress at the time of independence.  

He was one of the social and political leaders during Indian Independence Movement and started ‘Servants of India’ Society.  

To achieve aim of independence he preached two principles known as non-violence and reform within existing government institutions through non-violence.

Gopal Krishna Gokhale was born in Chitpavan Brahmin family in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra.  

He was born to Krishna Rao and Valubai.  

In such financial conditions Gopal’s father send him to English medium school and he was the first batch of Indians to study in English medium school.  

After passing he studied in Elphinstone College.  

Studies brought clarity in him as he went for western politics.
