    Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on 2nd October 1904 in Varanasi in a Hindu family.  His father was a school teacher.  He was our Prime minister during a brief period in 1965.  He was also the leader of the Indian National Congress Party, with a great heritage and prestige.

   He was very much impressed by Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru.  LB Shastri was a man of great character, conduct, leadership, honesty and integrity.  He joined the Freedom movement in 1920s.  Shastriji participated in Satyagrapha movement.  He went to jail for 9 years.

   Shastriji graduated from Kashi Vidyapeeth in Philosophy.  He married Lalita Devi in 1928 in a traditional way.  They had four sons and two daughters.

    After the Independence, he became Railway minister and Home Minister too.  After Pandit Nehru's death he became the prime minister.

   He continued the Non-alignment, socialist, people's welfare and peace policy of Nehru.  He gave us the slogan "Jai Jawan , Jai Kisan" meaning victory to farmer and soldier during the India-Pakistan war in 1965.  During the Tashkent agreement with Pakistan he died of heart attack on 10th Jan, 1966.

   He was a model citizen and leader of India. Shastriji was awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1966.
