Biochemical Characterization specially in terms of Microbiology means what kind of Carbon and nitrogen sources a microbe is able to utilize, hydrolyze, oxidize and reduce, what are various kind of enzyme activities does it exhibit. These results give a preliminary data on what class the organism belongs to. For eg. Citrate Ultization, Nitrate reduction test, Growth on Mac-conkey agar, hydrolysis of gelatin, agar-agar, oxidase test, catalase test all come under biochemical chacaterization. Specially In Biolog the identification of microbes is purely based on Biochemical characterization. However in molecular characterization you go for either 16S rRNA or 18S rRNA ribotyping in case of prokaryotes and eucaryotes respectively to know the exact genus of that organism as its unique and remains conserved.
