Two models for Golgi biogenesis. In de novo assembly, Golgi proteins present in the ER can exit and self-organise to form a new Golgi complexthat is in dynamic equilibrium with the ER. With template-mediated assembly, a new Golgi complex is generated around a pre-existing template that is independent from the ER.
