Answer:

Charles Goodyear was an American self-taught chemist and manufacturing engineer who developed vulcanized rubber, for which he received patent number 3633 from the United States Patent Office on June 15, 1844. In 1839 he accidentally dropped some India rubber mixed with sulfur on a hot stove and so discovered vulcanization. He was granted his first patent in 1844 but had to fight numerous infringements in court; the decisive victory did not come until 1852.Even Goodyear's success was short-lived. He spent much of the fortune he earned from his patent fighting patent infringements in courts in the United States and abroad. Charles Goodyear died at 59 in 1860, $200,000 in debt.
