Rabindranath Tagore was a famous Indian poet known as Gurudev. Tagore was born on 7 May 1861 in Jor-Sanko, Calcutta, to a wealthy cultured family. His parents were Maharishi Devendranath (father) and Sharda Devi (mother). He was fond of writing poems since childhood. Apart from being a great poet, he was also a humanist, patriot, painter, novelist, story writer, educationist and philosopher. He was the country’s cultural ambassador who spread the knowledge of Indian culture throughout the world. He was a talented child of his time who did great things. He was like a rising sun in the field of poetry writing.

Through his writing in the form of poems or stories, he displayed the mental and moral spirit of the people well. His writings have proved to be pioneering and revolutionary even for the people of today. He was deeply saddened by the tragedy of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in which many innocent people including women and children were killed by General Dyer and his soldiers in Amritsar on 13 April 1919.

Apart from being a great poet, he was also a patriot who always believed in the unity of life and its spirit. Through all his writing, he tried his best to maintain love, peace and brotherhood, as well as to keep them one and bring people closer. Through his poems and stories, he had told about love and harmony well. Tagore’s entire life also provided a clear idea of love and harmony to each other. His dedication to the country is seen with the following statements, “My country which is always India, my father’s country, my children’s country, my country has given me life and strength”. And again, “I must be born again in India”.
