Soumitra Chatterjee (also spelt as Chattopadhyay; 19 January 1935 – 15 November 2020)[2] was an Indian film actor, director, playwright, writer and poet. He is best known for his collaborations with director Satyajit Ray, with whom he worked in fourteen films.

Soumitra Chatterjee was an actor, director, writer and poet. He was born on 19th January, 1935 in Kolkata. His father's name was Mohit Kumar Chatterjee and his mother's name was Ashalata Chatterjee. The first ten years of his early life were spent in Krishnanagar in West Bengal. Soumitra Chatterjee and his family moved to Howrah and he was admitted at Howrah Zilla School. He graduated from the City College, Kolkata with honours in Bengali literature. He studied for his M.A in Bengali from the University of Calcutta. While still a student, he learnt acting.

Soumitra Chatterjee started his career working in All India Radio as an announcer. While he was there, he started pursuing a career in films. His first film was 'Apur Sansar' directed by the famous director Sri Satyajeet Roy. Some of his famous films are 'Charulata', 'Sonar Kella', 'Joy Baba Felunath', 'Hirak Rajar Deshe', 'Ganashatru', etc. He also worked with other noted directors such as Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha, Asit Sen. He was the recipient of multiple honours and awards. He was awarded with the 'Padma Bhushan' in 2004. He was also awarded with France's highest civilian award 'The Legion of honour'. The great actor received two national film awards. Unfortunately, on October 5th, in 2020, he tested positive for COVID-19 and hospitalized. On 15th November, Soumitra Chatterjee died.
