The same physical, chemical, and biological attributes that make estuaries valuable and productive ecosystems have attracted large populations to their shores. In heavily urbanized estuaries like the Hudson, this has resulted in degraded water quality and decline in ecosystem function. Efforts over the past several decades, however, are leading to an ongoing recovery of the estuary. The aim of this work is not to return the estuary to its preimpacted or natural state, but rather to create a sustainable environment that will support a rich and productive ecosystem while providing benefits to the surrounding human population.
