BIOLOGY: Take large carrot/potato pieces(peeled and unpeeled both) and place in the beakers containing the following liquids. 1. Alcohol 2. Distilled water, 3. Saturated salt solution, 4. Saturated sugar solution, 5. Vinegar and milk. The carrot/potato pieces are observed after 6-8 hours. Answer the following questions by your observations. a. What the difference in the physical state of carrots/potato is as observed in all the six different cases? b. Name the processes involved that has caused a change in carrot / potato
Answers
Answer:
The entire steps for the experiment was followed.
Accordingly,
1. In the four different cases, the peeled potatoes will be observed to imbibe the provided solvent (Alcohol, Distilled water, Vinegar and milk) inside it.
This is observed by the decrease in the level of the solvent in the beaker from the initial level.
But in case of saturated salt solution and saturated sugar solution, the potato is seen to lose water. This is observed by the increase in the level of the solvent in the beaker from the initial level.
However, the unpeeled potato in all the cases showed no such effect.
2. The process involved in this is Osmosis.
In case of alcohol, distilled water, vinegar and milk, Endosmosis occurred.
In case of Saturated salt solution, Saturated sugar solution, Exosmosis occurred.
