Bioluminescence is prominent in the phylum in Ctenophora.

  • Ctenophora phylum comes in order after Cnidaria.

  • Comb jellies have photo-cytes activated by Calcium ; it is responsible for emission of light.

  • The main function of bioluminescence in Ctenophora organisms is to protect themselves by showing a bright light onto the prey.

  • This surprises and startles the prey and confuses it , thereby prevents being preyed.

Other bioluminescent organisms are some of the zoo-planktons and planktons.

  • More related information can be found in the ANIMAL KINGDOM chapter of NCERT biology class 11 book.
