Bishop;

He was a person highly influenced by Christian ideals of justice, empathy and compassion.
He was highly helpful to the needy. The example of selling the salt-cellars proves this.
He was a man who believed in the concept of forgiveness. He didn 't want to punish the convict because he knew that would do him and his soul no good.
He was a very successful bishop, best suited for what he did. He believed all that he preached.
He had a very simple character and he was extremely honest and true to his ideals.

Convict;

The convict was a normal human being living with his wife. Once his wife got seriously ill. The convict due to unemployment could not even buy food. This led him to steal and buy food for his dying wife. This was a turning point as the police nabbed him. From an ordinary human being he became a convict.

The broadminded empathy and the kindness of the Bishop touched the convict when the latter wanted the convict to start a life of his own. The convict was completely sure when he was caught by the police that the Bishop would lead him to punishment in prison. When the Bishop did otherwise, he was moved. He decided to lead a completely different life and focus on settling finally.

Persome:Persome is really portrayed as a cruel and hard-hearted women. she is just the opposite of the bishop in terms of human values. she has a narrow thinking unlike the large heartedness and benevolence of the bishop. she is self-centred and thinks of her own interests. she rebukes marie for telling the bishop that her mother is ill. the bishop would visit her then. she shows her cruelty and hard-heartedness towards the convict. this happens when he steals the bishop 's candlesticks. persome wants the bishop to inform the police to arrest the convict. she, however, loves her brother, the bishop, and feels greatly concerned for him. she dosen 't trust the people for the bishop 's sake. they may exploit the bishop. he is very simple-hearted and helpful. he sells his salt-cellars to help mere gringoire because she can 't pay the house rent. but persome dosen 't like it at all.
