Biosphere:

⇒ An Overview

The narrow zone of the earth where the three main components - lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere meet together to sustain life is known as biosphere. It is a combination of both biotic and abiotic factors. All living organisms - the birds, the plants, the microbes etc. live in the biosphere. No organisms can live without any one of them. It is the sphere where life exists.

⇒ Derivation

The word biosphere derives from two Greek words - bios and sphaira that mean life and zone respectively.

⇒ Components

The different components of the biosphere are discussed below:

✳ Atmosphere - The atmosphere refers to the dome of air. The sky, the clouds, the air all fall in the category.

✳ Hydrosphere - The hydrosphere refers to the dome of water. The lakes, the ponds, the seas, the oceans etc. fall in this category.

✳ Lithosphere - The lithosphere refers to the dome of land. It refers to the terrestrial area.

⇒ Why is biosphere important?

No organisms can live without biosphere. Consider the following examples:

A bird

A bird flies in the air. --- Atmosphere

It sits on a tree to rest. --- Lithosphere

It catches fish from ponds. --- Hydrosphere

A fish

A fish lives in water. --- Hydrosphere

It needs air to breathe. --- Atmosphere

It lays its eggs in water that settle on the ground. --- Lithosphere

A cat

A cat lives on land. --- Lithosphere

It needs air to breathe. --- Atmosphere

It drinks water. --- Hydrosphere

In all these examples, we can clearly observe that the participation of all the three components is required for a living organism to live. Hence, biosphere is important.
