Explanation:

1. Genetic engineering (Genetic modification or Genetic manipulation) is defined as the process in which gene of an organism is manipulated using biotechnology. An organsim developed or produced using genetic engineering technique is known as genetically modifid organism (GMO).
2. Genetic engineering is used to solve the problem regarding genetic diseases, pest  resistant plants, and to grow variety of plants, hence used in several fields such as agricultire, medicne and industrial biotechnology.
3. In the process of gentic engineering, recombinant DNA method is used to create new DNA by isolating and copying the genetic material of our interest which further inserted into the host organism. A DNA of interest can also synthetically created and further inserted into the host organism.
4. Biotechnologists developed first pest resistance cotton crop using biotechnology named "Bt cotton" which was genetically modified to produce insecticide against bollworm.  
5. Bt cotton was first approved in 1993 in the filed of United States and commercially approved in 1995 in the United States.
6. Bt cotton was produced by inserting genes to encode toxin crystals in the Cry endotoxin group. As insects invade and consume the cotton plant the Cry toxins or crystal protein aresllowed to dissolved because of high pH level of the stomach of the insect. The cry toxin attach to the epithilial cell of mid gut in instects  and form ion channels for the regular flow of potassium.  Reguation of potassium causes death of epithilial cells and further causes death of instect.
