Biotechnology is important in that it may provide solutions to major global issues. These global issues may include world hunger, global warming and, pollution.

Biotechnology has also provided positively to the medical field, for instance, various vaccines have been developed due to the knowledge in biotechnology.

The disadvantage of biotechnology may be that genetically modified plants may transfer their traits to other plants such as weeds and this may make weeds resistant to some herbicides.

As others who answered have said, the danger posed biotechnology exists mainly because of the intent of the people who misuse it. That being said, even when intended purely for good, it can have negative consequences. The ill it can do to the world is most easily shown through genetic engineering and the technology that enables it. So, for those not fully informed of the full extent of our gene-altering potential, we(humankind) have obtained a tool that allows us to begin altering the genetic sequences of other lifeforms: A prokaryotic immune response, we have begun to scratch the surface of genomic editing with it, and it acts as a sort of pre-alpha version of future mechanisms for our changing the genomes of different species.

Okay Adam, so what? What is the point of bringing up CRISPR and gene editing? Well, with the capabilities it and its successors offer us, we could eradicate all genetic disorders and all become superhumans with enhanced senses and strength, the ability to retain information like the greatest geniuses by changing ourselves, and end starvation world-wide with genetically altered crops, or we could single-handedly eradicate all life on our planet. We could create antibiotic-resistant superbugs that cause havoc among our enemies. An outbreak within a lab containing these diseases could cause death on an immense scale, wiping out cities, and even countries before a counter-mechanism could be put in place. Just imagine the destruction that Kim Jong Un could unleash with these(Hint: Everyone Dies™)

We could choose only to alter the wealthiest citizens, consigning the impoverished(and anyone who was refused gene-alteration) into a spiral of failure and second-class citizenship, a la . Also, if said technology were to fall into the wrong hands, wars would be fought with genetically-enhanced super-soldiers, or a government could place a “fail-safe” in all its citizens, holding them hostages even before they were born, under threat of death. Along these lines, genetic engineering done to make crops less susceptible to insects could ruin whole ecosystems that depend on them as keystone species. That is how just one type of Biotechnology could harm the world.

All this being said, the progression of this and many other kinds of biotechnology holds more benefits than it does risks. As long as these ventures are undertaken safely, and not taken too quickly, I believe we have far more to gain from ventures in technology of all sorts. For now, CRISPR is only in its infancy, and it is far from possible for us to use it on humans, but with the steady march of technology, I assure you that how to use it will become a question for us and our descendants all to ponder upon.

Biotechnology by itself is not dangerous. It depends on the person who is using it. If his motivations are good, then there is no danger as of now but there is always a smaller probability of errors (mutations if in the case of recombinant DNA technology). A seemingly harmless virus, used in gene therapy, can mutate to a virulent strain due to mutations.
