A day after BJP celebrated the big win in Karnataka, it got a rude shock in MP

Two of its MLAs voted in the favour of Congress government ona bill in Assembly

The 2 BJP MLAs, former Congressmen, said that this was their ghar vapasi

The Bharatiya Janata Party's euphoria for successfully toppling the Karnataka government lasted less than 24 hours. A day after HD Kumarswamy-led Congress-JD (S) coalition government collapsed due to rebellion by its 15 MLAs, the BJP got a rude shock in Madhya Pradesh. Two of its MLAs backed the seven-month-old Congress-led government during voting on a bill in the Assembly on Wednesday.

The BJP MLAs, Narayan Tripathi and Sharad Kol - both former Congressmen - voted in favour of the Criminal Law (Madhya Pradesh Amendment) Bill, 2019 when it was put to vote in the Assembly.

Storm brewing in Madhya Pradesh

Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh is among only four state government led by Congress across the nation. Even as the Congress rules as the single largest party in the state, it is not in clear majority.

In 2018 elections, the Congress had won 114 seats, the BJP 109, the BSP 2, the SP 1 and four seats had gone to the independent candidates. The halfway mark in 230-strong Assembly in Madhya Pradesh is 115. Congress formed the government with the support of all but BJP MLAs in the state.

As soon as the Karnataka government toppled, the din about Madhya Pradesh turmoil could be heard. In a late-night statement on Tuesday, Leader of Opposition Gopal Bhargava of the BJP said that the Madhya Pradesh government will be on the way out.

Speaking to India Today TV about the developments in Karnataka, Gopal Bhargava said, "The situation in Madhya Pradesh is similar. There is a crisis in the state due to transfer scam, cheating with the farmers, corruption and loot. I am sure that the Madhya Pradesh government will soon be on its way out."
