Deccan plateau and most of the Indian subcontinent was part of an ancient landmass of Gonwanaland around 200 million years ago (20 crore years). This supercontinent consisted of today’s Africa, Arabian peninsula, South America, Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, the island of Papua, Madagascar and the Indian Subcontinent.
The last two areas were joined together. Plate tectonics caused these landmasses to break apart. This caused huge volcanic activity around western border of India and eastern Madagascar. These volcanoes produced enough lava to cover an area of nearly 500,000 square kilometres (190,000 sq mi) in west-central India with a 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) thick layer of flat-lying basalt, an Igneous rock formed by lava flow. The rocks are spread over the whole of Maharashtra and parts of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. These are called the Deccan Traps.
Layer after layer was formed by the volcanic activity that lasted many thousands of years, and when the volcanoes became extinct, they left a region of highlands with typically vast stretches of flat areas on top like a table. This accelearated the extiction of Dinosaurs. The volcanic hotspot that produced the Deccan traps is hypothesized to lie under the present day island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean.

Black soil is largely found in the Deccan Trap regionbecause it is 'In situ' and is formed by the weathering of solidified lava spread over large areas of Deccan Trap during volcanic activity.
