Black soil is also known as regur soil. It is essentially found in the lava covered areas of Maharasthra, Karnataka etc. The word regur originates from the latin word regurgitare which means to overflow. The four characteristics of this soil are as under:
1. A rich soil in nature consisting of a mixture of sand, clay and organic materials.
2. Black in nature, proves ideal for the growth of crops like cotton.
3.They are typical of Godavari and Krishna valleys; known for their water retention capacity.
4. They are made up of lava flows. Known to develop cracks for proper exchange of air and rich in calcium carbonate, potash etc.
