Answer:

Due to the earth movements, movements at plate boundaries place stress and tension on the crustal rocks. These tensional or compressional forces result in parts of the crusts to be fractured. Hence, a fault is a fracture/cracked in the rocks which are being displaced.

We usually associate faults with earthquakes.

Block mountains and rift valleys are associated landform as they are formed by the divergent plate boundaries due to the tensional forces which act on its boundary.

Explanation:

  • When the tension force is strong, it drifts apart the plates at the divergent boundaries, causing the central block to drop leaving behind the two blocks on either sides.
  • The central block that dropped is due to the faulting and create graben which has steep walls. Thus, forming rift valley.
  • Sometimes, the central block rises steeply leading to formation of block mountains.
  • The Great rift valley of Africa, the Narmada rift valley in India, the Rhine rift valley in Germany, Mt. Vosges in Europe, Vindhyan and Satpura ranges in India are some of the prominent examples.
