Wise man has long ears and short tongue

Undoubtedly, all men and women make many mistake as they grow; talking indiscriminately and ceaselessly is the basic characteristic of young and less experienced people. Everyone takes delight in purposeless chattering. As man gathers experience from his follies, he realizes this chattering is the root cause of all of his problems. He more he realizes so, the calmer he becomes.

Wisdom compels us to grow longer ears and curtail our tongue shorter. Long ears and short tongue are metaphors for ‘more listening’ and ‘less talking’. Listening more and talking less allows us to be more reflective and introspective. Reflection and introspection lead to deep meditative state in which we find the solutions to life’s problems.

So, having long ears and short tongue are agreeable qualities of character.
