India offers unity in diversity”…Vincent Smith… Diversity characterizes India. The diverse characters of India are strongly unified and perfectly assimilated to emerge as a one single nation. Though India is a land of people of different castes, creeds and religions, it stands united. Regional, social and geographical diversities have not undermined the foundation of the traditional unity among Indians. The linguistic diversity in India has now been overcome by the introduction and acceptance of Hindi as the state language. India stands with its head raised like a firmly rooted tree with many branches. As the branches are inseparable from the tree, so the states with their distinct characters and identities are inextricable from India. India is a land of many climates, of many people, of different habits and dresses, festivals and foods, customs and cultures…but the strong thread of basic unity kept them together. The people of India have staunch faith in India as a united nation. India is thus a world in a miniature. That’s why, India is called, “Epitome of the world”.
These diversities have given rise to a composite culture, which reflects unity in diversity. Here Hinduism has virtually been a unifying force that has cemented friendship and brotherhood among the Hindus. The Muslims, Christians who are born and bought up in India love the country and show their loyalty to India as a united country. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “Indian culture is neither Hindu, nor Islamic, nor any other wholly…it is a fusion of all”.
The principles of peaceful co-existence, fraternity, the long history of tolerance, cooperation, mutual trust and mutual respect to religions have unified India.
