The functions of a connective tissue are to provide support to the internal organs, establish connections through the body to hold it together and to protect it and maintain the body homeostasis. Blood performs all these essential functions and hence it is known as a ‘fluid connective tissue’.  

The main components in blood are:

(i) Red blood cells (RBCs) which contain the red pigment haemoglobin that binds to oxygen and carries it to the different parts of the body.  

(ii) White blood cells (WBCs) which protect the body against pathogens.

(iii) Platelets which are responsible for blood clotting.
