Blood pressure is measured with the help of an instrument called Sphygmomanometer Its inflatable cuff is
wrapped above the elbow air is pumped in the cuff till the manometer of the instrument shows very high
pressure diaphragm of the Stethoscope is placed over the brachial artery and any sound listened. There will be
no sound. The pressure in the cuff is slowly released till the first sound is heard. It shows systemic blood
pressure. As the air is further released a stage comes when hearing of sound stops, it is diastolic pressure. The
normal value of the two are 120/80mm/Hg. A higher value indicates Hypertension while a lower value shows
Hypotension.
