The first Wednesday of every month was considered a ‘Blue Wednesday’ because the trustees of the John Grier Home came by for an inspection. Every floor had to be spotless, every chair dustless and every bed without a wrinkle. All ninety-seven orphans had to be scrubbed, combed, neatly dressed and reminded of their manners. Jerusha, being the oldest, had been given the responsibility to take care of eleven little tots.
