BOD can be used as a gauge of the effectiveness of wastewater treatment plants. It is listed as a conventional pollutant in the U.S. Clean Water Act. BOD is similar in function to chemical oxygen demand (COD), in that both measure the amount of organic compounds in water.

Effluents before discharge are as follows :-

Effluents can be biologically detoxified if they have little or no heavy metals. Following are the steps for treatement of effluents before discharge.

Primary Discharge :- Sludge, the solid content of the sewage, is removed in this treatement. Sludge can be removed either by filteration or by setting the sludge by sinking it.

Secondary Treatement :-The clear effluent undergoes aeration in secondary treatement. The liquid phase may be aerated in daylight in large storage tanks.

Tertiary Treatement :- The liquid phase is passed throught the clear filter tube which is exposed to intense ultraviolet light. The treatement will totally destroy all known \mathsf{(Pathogens).}
