The body fluids of sharks and colenterates are termed as Hypertonic.

  • Sharks are marine mammals and are cartilaginous. They have adaptations that are osmoregulatory, allowing them to to withstand their environment's salt concentrations.
  • They can build up and withstand high urea concentrations. Urea is poisonous to most species, however their tissues are modified to function at urea concentrations.
  • The high concentration of urea makes the body fluids highly hypertonic to the water at sea resulting in a net water inflow. They have kidneys which are well developed and are capable of excreting huge quantities of urine.
