alcohol cantains strong hydrogen bonding between O-H bond but ethers does not have a strong bonding between O- C hence it has low boiling point than alcohol

In case of isomeric alcohol the lone pair of electron in the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group donates itself to the hydrogen in the neighbouring atom of the alcohol.

Explanation:

  • But in case of the ether having same molecular formula the lone pair in oxygen cannot attach itself to any of the hydrogen since all are present in methyl form.
  • Due to the ‘presence of hydrogen bond’, the resulting boiling point increases in the alcohols but is significantly less in case of ethers.
