Cotton wool is made up of cotton fibres. It is obtained from plants that are grown in fields at places having black soil and a warm climate. These plants bear fruits that are called cotton bolls. Once these bolls mature, they burst open and the seeds covered with cotton fibres can be seen.
Cotton is picked by hand from these bolls, and then the fibres are separated from the seeds by a process called combing. This entire process is called ginning of cotton.
