Some molecules containing a bond with a significant bond-dissociation energy for homolytic cleavage actually might readily be broken by heterolysis. For example, the bond H–F requires significant energy to dissociate by homolysis, but it is readily dissociated via heterolysis, into H+ and F– when placed in water

Homolysis (chemistry) ... During homolyticfission of a neutral molecule with an even number of electrons, two free radicals will be generated. That is, the two electrons involved in the original bond are distributed between the two fragment species. The energyinvolved in this process is called bond dissociation energy.
