Given:

Bond energies of H2, Cl2 and HCl are respectively 104, 58 and 100 kcal mol-1.

To find:

Calculate Pauling’s electronegativity of chlorine.

Solution:

From given, we have,

Bond energies of H2, Cl2 and HCl are respectively 104, 58 and 100 kcal mol-1.

Electronegativity (χ), describes the tendency of an atom to attract a shared pair of electrons towards itself.

Pauling’s electronegativity is calculated as,

χA - χB = 0.102 √[E_{AB} - √(E_{AA} × E_{BB})]

for given, we have,

H₂ + Cl₂ → HCl

where,

χA = Cl₂ and χB = H₂

E_{AB} = HCl, E_{AA} = H₂ and E_{BB}) = Cl₂

χA - 2.2 = 0.102 √[100 - (58 × 104)]

upon solving the above equation, we get,

χA = Cl₂ = 3.15

Therefore, the Pauling’s electronegativity of chlorine is 3.15
