Answer:

1) Bassanio introduces the letter as a letter from his dearest friend Antonio. After reading the letter he describes it as worst thing ever. He says that the words in the letter are hurting him and these words seem like worst stains on a cloth.

2) Bassanio choses the lead casket because after hearing the song which was sung on request of Portia, he thinks not to support the fancy i.e, not to go for looks and choose one of the caskets. His decided to choose the lead casket as he was ready to follow the casket i.e, as per the carvings of the casket he was ready to risk his everything for Portia.

Explanation:

  1. The letter which he recieved from his friend was the "worst letter" as described by him. This was conveyed to Portia when he said that he was "bragging". He also said that how he had taken money from his friend Antonio, who had taken that money from one of his enemy. He also asked Salerio if the news was true that all his business was in loss, and if he had succeeded in Mexico, India, Europe etc. He described the letter as "body of his friend", every word was written with gaping wound, "issuing life blood".
  2. Bassanio chooses a lead casket because he was given 3 caskets :- Gold, silver and lead. According to him, people are much influenced by the outer beauty,  like they are flattered by those looks. He was against those luring thoughts. His reason for rejecting the silver and gold caskets were also due to the same thing. It has been mentioned by a common proverb - "all that glitters is not gold" and he did it. all for his affection and love of Portia.  .

  • The letter which he recieved was from none other than Antonio, his friend who was a merchant and had thought that he might be successful while trading in the countries of Mexico, India etc.

  • Must Read from Shakespeare:-
  • As you like it
  • Midsummer Night's Dream
  • Hamlet
  • King Lear
  • Othello
  • Poem - For Anne Gregory
  • Shakespeare's Sonnets

What is most important is the type off language which he uses in his stories, sonnets and poems. The language is English which was used in earlier times.
