No statement could be more true than this. Time immemorial has proved the worth of books. Be it the great Socrates or Martin Luther, Swami Vivekananda or Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Jawahar Lal Nehru in prison, books have always been man’s best friend .

In Anton Chekov’s short story ‘The Bet’ we find how books serve as the best friend, teacher and mentor of a self- imprisoned young man. Reading   evolves him from a frivolous, extravagant youth to a wise, philosophical person.    

Books are one's best friends because unlike humans  they are unselfish, undemanding and friends in need.

Francis Bacon, the great essayist has highlighted in his  aphoristic essay  ‘On Reading’, the value of books and reading. He asserted that reading helps a man to be accomplished.  

Books enrich the reader’s language skills . It improves the comprehension power and helps in building a good word stock. Books  help sharpen one’s wisdom as it enhances experience.  

Books function as teachers. They are didactic as they teach important lessons of life. Books are like friends who transport the Reader quietly to a different kingdom of existence.  Thus they are the gifts a reader can crave most for.
