Borders have been used ever since the Indus Valley Civilization, as is proven by the design on some of the tablets. They continue to be in vogue and can be applied on a wide range of objects including accessories, footwear, linen, furnishings, homes and offices. Keeping that idea in mind, a border can be applied in many situations, depending on the purpose they serve.
There are various functions of borders:
1. Marking the areas clearly for administrative purposes (like borders between countries, states and even districts). It is essential for security and taxation purposes. It also helps define the geographical location clearly.
2. Beautification and adding aesthetic value. A simple sheet of paper without borders is not as appealing as a layout that has borders. Similarly, the bulletin boards that are put up on the school walls have borders too.
