Answer:

Both ethyne and carbon dioxide have sp hybridisation.

Explanation:

The linear structure of ethyne and that of carbon dioxide is explained on the basis of hybridisation.

An ethyne molecule is formed when both the carbon atoms undergo sp hybridisation and have two unhybridised orbitals(2py and 2px). One sp hybrid orbital of one carbon overlaps axially with the sp hybrid orbital of the other carbon atom and results in a C-C sigma bond, while the other hybridised orbital of each carbon atom overlaps with the half-filled s orbital of the hydrogen atom to form a sigma bond.

The remaining two unhybridised p orbitals of both carbons overlap sidewise to form two pie bonds. Thus a triple bond is present in the ethyne molecule and is linear.

CO₂ also has a linear geometry. In CO₂ the carbon atom is in a state of sp hybridisation. The two sp hybridised orbitals of the carbon atom overlap with two p orbitals of the oxygen atom to form two C-O sigma bonds, while the other two electrons of the carbon atom are involved in pπ-pπ bonding with an oxygen atom. Thus, a linear molecule of carbon dioxide is formed.
